Sirilus dan Metodius

Santo Sirilus dan Metodius (826-869, 815-885; bahasa Yunani: Κύριλλος καὶ Μεθόδιος; bahasa Slavonia Gerejawi Kuno: Кѷриллъ и Меѳодїи^[lainnya]) adalah dua bersaudara misionaris dan teolog Kristen Bizantin. Mereka mempengaruhi perkembangan budaya seluruh bangsa Slavia melalui karya-karya mereka, sehingga mereka diberi gelar "Rasul-Rasul Bangsa Slavia". Mereka dikenal karena menyusun alfabet Glagol, yaitu alfabet pertama yang digunakan untuk menulis dalam bahasa Slavonia Gerejawi Kuno. Setelah kematian mereka, para murid mereka melanjutkan karya misionaris mereka di antara bangsa Slavia lainnya. Kedua bersaudara ini dihormati di Gereja Ortodoks sebagai para santo dengan gelar "setara rasul". Pada tahun 1880, Paus Leo XIII memasukkan hari peringatan mereka ke dalam kalender Gereja Katolik Roma. Pada tahun 1980, Paus Yohanes Paulus II menyatakan mereka sebagai para santo pelindung Eropa, bersama dengan Benediktus dari Nursia.

Awal karier

Masa muda

Dua bersaudara ini dilahirkan di Tesalonika, di Yunani masa kini; Sirilus lahir antara tahun 827–828 dan Metodius antara tahun 815–820. Dikatakan bahwa Sirilus adalah bungsu dari tujuh bersaudara; ia terlahir dengan nama Konstantinus, namun menggunakan nama Sirilus setelah menjadi seorang rahib di Roma tidak lama sebelum ia wafat, sebagaimana tertulis dalam "Vita Cyrilli" ("Kehidupan Sirilus"). Metodius terlahir dengan nama Mikael dan menggunakan nama Metodius setelah menjadi rahib di Olympus Mysia (Uludağ masa kini), di barat laut Turki. Ayah mereka bernama Leo, seorang droungarios di Tesalonika, salah satu thema Bizantin, dan ibu mereka bernama Maria.

Kepastian mengenai etnis kedua bersaudara ini tidak diketahui, terdapat kontroversi mengenai apakah Sirilus dan Metodius adalah orang Slavia atau Yunani Bizantin, atau keduanya. Kedua bersaudara ini kehilangan ayah mereka ketika Sirilus berumur 14 tahun, dan seorang pejabat berpengaruh bernama Theoktistos, yang menjabat sebagai Logothetes tou dromou, salah satu menteri utama Kekaisaran, menjadi pelindung mereka. Bersama dengan Bupati Bardas, ia juga bertanggung jawab atas dimulainya suatu program pendidikan dengan jangkauan luas di dalam Kekaisaran yang berpuncak dalam pendirian Universitas Magnaura, tempat Sirilus mengajar. Sirilus ditahbiskan sebagai imam beberapa waktu setelah pendidikannya, sementara Metodius saudaranya tetap sebagai seorang diakon sampai tahun 867/868.

Penemuan alfabet Kiril dan Glagolitik

Alfabet Kiril dan Glagolitik merupakan alfabet Slavia tertua yang diketahui, dan diciptakan oleh dua bersaudara ini bersama para murid mereka, digunakan untuk menerjemahkan Alkitab dan teks-teks lainnya ke dalam bahasa Slavia. Alfabet Glagolitik awal digunakan di Moravia Raya antara tahun 863 (waktu kedatangan Sirilus dan Metodius) dan 885 (waktu diusirnya para murid mereka) untuk berbagai buku dan dokumen keagamaan maupun pemerintahan. Selain itu juga digunakan di Akademi Moravia Raya (Veľkomoravské učilište) yang didirikan oleh Sirilus, yaitu tempat pendidikan para pengikut Sirilus dan Metodius, oleh Metodius sendiri dan yang lainnya. Alfabet ini secara tradisi dikaitkan dengan Sirilus. Atribusi tersebut secara eksplisit dikonfirmasikan oleh surat kepausan Industriae tuae (880) yang menyetujui penggunaan bahasa Slavonik Gerejawi Kuno, dengan penyebutan bahwa alfabet ini "ditemukan oleh Konstantinus sang Filsuf". Istilah penemuan belum tentu mengecualikan kemungkinan bahwa dua bersaudara ini pernah menggunakan abjad-abjad yang lebih awal, tetapi hanya mengimplikasikan bahwa sebelum saat itu bahasa Slavia tidak memiliki aksara khusus.

Alfabet Kiril Awal dikembangkan dalam Kekaisaran Bulgaria Pertama yang kemudian diselesaikan dan disebarkan oleh para murid bernama Kliment dan Naum di sekolah-sekolah di Preslav dan Ohrid, di Bulgaria pada masa pemerintahan Tsar Boris, sebagai penyederhanaan dari alfabet Glagolitik yang lebih mirip dengan alfabet Yunani. Alfabet tersebut dikembangkan oleh murid-murid Santo Sirilus dan Metodius di Sekolah Sastra Preslav pada akhir abad ke-9.

Prosesi Santo Sirilus dan Metodius

Proses kanonisasi jauh lebih longgar pada beberapa masa setelah wafatnya Sirilus dibandingkan dengan saat ini. Sirilus dipandang oleh para muridnya sebagai seorang santo tidak lama setelah wafatnya. Para pengikutnya menyebar di berbagai bangsa tempat ia melakukan penginjilan dan kemudian kepada Gereja Kristen yang lebih luas. Bersama dengan Metodius saudaranya, mereka dikenal sebagai orang suci. Dikatakan bahwa ada seruan untuk kanonisasi Sirilus dari kerumunan massa di jalan-jalan Romawi saat prosesi pemakamannya. Kemunculan pertama dua bersaudara ini di dokumen kepausan adalah dalam Grande Munus dari Paus Leo XIII pada tahun 1880. Mereka dikenal sebagai "Rasul-Rasul Bangsa Slavia", dan sampai saat ini masih sangat dihormati oleh umat Kristen Ortodoks maupun Katolik Roma. Hari peringatan mereka saat ini dirayakan pada tanggal 14 Februari di Gereja Katolik Roma (bertepatan dengan tanggal wafatnya St Sirilus); pada tanggal 11 Mei di Gereja Ortodoks Timur (kendati untuk Gereja-Gereja Ortodoks Timur yang menggunakan kalender Julian adalah tanggal 24 Mei menurut kalender Gregorian); dan tanggal 7 Juli menurut kalender orang kudus yang digunakan sebelum Konsili Vatikan II. Perayaan tersebut juga memperingati diperkenalkannya keaksaraan dan pemberitaan Injil dalam bahasa Slavonik oleh kedua bersaudara ini. Mereka dinyatakan sebagai "Pelindung Eropa" pada tahun 1980.

Menurut sejarah kuno Bulgaria, hari peringatan kedua bersaudara suci ini dirayakan secara gerejawi setidaknya sejak abad ke-11. Perayaan sekuler atas Hari Peringatan Santo Sirilus dan Metodius yang pertama tercatat sebagai "Peringatan aksara Bulgaria", sebagaimana secara tradisi dinyatakan dalam sejarah Bulgaria, diadakan di kota Plovdiv pada tanggal 11 Mei 1851, ketika suatu sekolah Bulgaria setempat diberi nama "Santo Sirilus dan Metodius". Kedua peristiwa itu diprakarsai oleh seorang tenaga pendidik terkemuka Bulgaria bernama Nayden Gerov, meskipun seorang wisatawan Armenia menyebut kunjungannya ke "perayaan aksara Bulgaria" di kota Shumen pada tanggal 22 Mei 1803.
