Sinope (bahasa Yunani: Σινώπη) adalah satelit ireguler retrograde Jupiter yang ditemukan oleh Seth Barnes Nicholson di Observatorium Lick pada tahun 1914, dan dinamai berdasarkan berdasarkan tokoh Sinope dalam mitologi Yunani.

Sinope yidak memperoleh namanya saat ini hingga tahun 1975. Sebelumnya, satelit ini hanya dikenal sebagai Jupiter IX. Satelit ini kadang disebut sebagai "Hades" pada tahun 1955 hingga 1975.

Sinope dahulu merupakan satelit Jupiter terluar yang diketahui pada saat itu hingga ditemukannya Megaclite pada tahun 2000. Satelit Jupiter terluar yang diketahui pada saat ini adalah S/2003 J 2.

Bersama Sinope, Jupiter untuk saat ini diketahui memiliki 79 satelit.

Orbit sunting

Kelompok Pasiphae

Sinope mengorbit Jupiter pada orbit retrograde dengan eksentrisitas dan inklinasi yang tinggi. Elemen orbit satelit tersebut tercatat per bulan Januari 2000. Elemen tersebut terus-menerus berubah oleh karena adanya gangguan matahari dan gangguan planeter dari Jupiter. Satelit ini sering diyakini sebagai bagian dari kelompok Pasiphae. Namun, mengingat inklinasi rata-rata dan warna yang berbeda, Sinope mungkin saja merupakan objek yang independen, ditangkap secara independen, dan tidak terkait dengan tabrakan dan perpecahan pada saat permulaan terbentuknya kelompok ini. Pasiphae juga diketahui berada dalam resonansi sekuler dengan Jupiter, mirip dengan Pasiphae. Namun, Sinope dapat keluar dari resonansi ini dan memiliki periode perilaku resonan dalam skala waktu 107 hari.

Ciri-ciri fisik sunting

Sinope memiliki perkiraan diameter sekitar 38 km (perkiraan albedo Sinope adalah 0,04) Sinope berwarna merah (indeks warna B−V=0.84, R−V=0.46), tidak seperti Pasiphae, yang berwarna abu-abu.

Spektrum inframerah Sinope mirip dengan asteroid tipe-D tetapi berbeda sama sekali dengan Pasiphae. Perbedaan-perbedaan dalam parameter fisik ini menunjukkan asal atau sumber yang berbeda dari anggota inti kelompok.
