Melanosit adalah sel penghasil melanin yang dapat ditemui di lapisan bawah (stratum basale) epidermis kulit, lapisan tengah mata (uvea), telinga dalam, epitelium vagina, meninges, tulang, dan jantung. Melanin adalah pigmen gelap yang mengatur warna kulit. Setelah disintesis, melanin disimpan di organel khusus yang disebut melanosom yang dapat diangkut ke keratinosit terdekat untuk memicu pigmentasi. Melanin sendiri berfungsi untuk melindungi kulit dari radiasi ultraviolet.

Melanosit juga merupakan bagian dari sistem imun dan dianggap sebagai sel imun. Walaupun fungsinya masih belum diketahui seluruhnya, melanosit memiliki banyak ciri yang sama dengan sel dendritik: morfologi bercabang, kemampuan sebagai fagosit, penyajian antigen ke sel T, dan produksi dan pengeluaran sitokin. Namun, keduanya memiliki asal usul yang berbeda: sel dendritik (seperti sel Langerhans) berasal dari sel punca hematopoietik di sumsum tulang, sementara melanosit berasal dari neural crest.
