Leopold von Ranke (bahasa Jerman: [fɔn ˈʁaŋkə]; 21 Desember 1795 – 23 Mei 1886) adalah sejarawan Jerman dan pendiri aliran sejarah modern yang berbasis pada naskah sumber. Menurut Caroline Hoefferle, "Ranke mungkin sejarawan paling penting untuk membentuk profesi sejarah seperti yang muncul di Eropa dan Amerika Serikat pada akhir abad ke-19 ". Dia mampu menerapkan metode pengajaran seminar di kelasnya dan berfokus pada penelitian arsip dan analisis dokumen sejarah. Membangun metode di Sekolah Sejarah Göttingen, Ranke menetapkan standar untuk banyak penulisan sejarah, memperkenalkan ide-ide seperti mengandalkan sumber primer (empirisme)), penekanan pada sejarah naratif dan terutama politik internasional (Außenpolitik, sejarah politik).
