Sebelum debut resminya, Bobby adalah juara pertama serial kompetisi rap Mnet Show Me the Money musim ketiga. Bobby juga muncul dalam program realitas Mnet Who is Next : WIN dan MIX & MATCH bersama anggota iKON lainnya, yakni B.I, Jinhwan, Junhoe, Kim Donghyuk, Yunhyeong dan Chanwoo pada tahun 2013 dan 2014.

Biografi

Bobby dilahirkan di Seoul, Korea Selatan, namun dibesarkan di Virginia, Amerika Serikat.

Ia diperkenalkan ke publik sebagai trainee YG pada episode pertama program WIN: Who is Next?. Ia merupakan bagian dari "Tim B" namun akhirnya kalah untuk dapat debut sebagai grup Winner. Setelah program ini selesai, Bobby membuat penampilan kameo di video musik "Ringa Linga" milik Taeyang Big Bang. Bobby ikut menulis lirik untuk singel utama "Empty" dari album debut Winner, 2014 S/S, bersama B.I dan Mino yang dirilis pada 12 Agustus 2014.

Pada Mei 2014, Bobby berhasil lolos audisi kompetisi rap Show Me The Money 3. Ia menjadi bagian dari tim "Illionaire" bersama Dok2 dan The Quiett dari Illionaire Records. Semua lagu yang Bobby bawakan pada acara ini dirilis secara digital dan memasuki tangga lagu Korea. Pada akhir acara, ia keluar sebagai juara pertama musim ini setelah berkompetisi melawan penyanyi rap Iron dan Vasco di putaran final.

Pada 13 September 2014, Bobby berpartisipasi di konser Illionaire Records, "11:11", bersama Dok2, The Quiett, dan Beenzino. Bobby tampil di singel Epik High, "Born Hater", bersama Beenzino, Verbal Jint, B.I, dan Mino. Pada 11 November, ia tampil sebagai penyanyi rap untuk lagu "I'm Different," dari unit Hi Suhyun. Pada akhir November, Bobby juga tampil bersama Dok2 di lagu Masta Wu, "Come Here."

Ia menampilkan "Born Hater" bersama Epik High di MAMA 2014, serta turut membawakan singelnya, "YGGR" dan "Come Here." Bobby masuk dalam daftar 'Men Of The Year' oleh majalah GQ Korea sebagai salah satu dari sekelompok laki-laki yang mempengaruhi budaya sepanjang tahun 2014.

"Tim B" debut sebagai grup beranggotakan tujuh orang dengan nama iKON pada 1 Oktober 2015, setelah formasi akhir anggota diumumkan melalui program Mix and Match yang tayang pada 6 November 2014. Bobby ditunjuk sebagai rapper utama grup.
