Teori alienasi Karl Marx mendeskripsikan alienasi (Jerman: Entfremdung) orang-orang dari aspek-aspek Gattungswesen ("esensi spesies") mereka sebagai konsekuensi dari kehidupan di dalam masyarakat dengan golongan-golongan sosial yang terstratifikasi. Sementara itu, alienasi diri adalah sebuah konsekuensi dari menjadi bagian mekanistik dari sebuah golongan sosial, sebuah kondisi yang mengalienasi seseorang dari kemanusiaan mereka.

Intelektual Jerman abad ke-19 Karl Marx (1818–1883) mengidentifikasikan dan mendeskripsikan empat jenis Entfremdung (alienasi sosial) yang dikenai para buruh di bawah kapitalisme.

Karl Marx mencetuskan teori Entfremdung mengenai alienasi diri dalam Manuskrip Ekonomi dan Filsafat 1844 (1927). Secara filosofis, teori Entfremdung bergantung pada Esensi Kekristenan (1841) karya Ludwig Feuerbach, yang menyatakan bahwa gagasan tuhan yang supranatural telah mengalienasikan karakteristik alami manusia. Setelah itu, dalam Der Einzige und sein Eigentum (1845), Max Stirner mengembangkan analisis Feuerbach dengan menyatakan bahwa gagasan "kemanusiaan" adalah sebuah konsep yamg mengalienasikan individu-individu; Marx dan Engels menanggapi gagasan filosofis tersebut dalam Ideologi Jerman (1845).
