Penemuan Neptunus

Planet Neptunus secara matematika diprediksi sebelum planet tersebut secara langsung diobservasi. Dengan sebuah prediksi buatan Urbain Le Verrier, observasi-observasi teleskoptik mengkonfirmasikan keberadaan sebuah planet utama yang dibuat pada malam 23-24 September 1846, di Observatorium Berlin, oleh astronom Johann Gottfried Galle (dibantu oleh Heinrich Louis d'Arrest), yang bekerja dari kalkulasi Le Verrier. Peristiwa tersebut merupakan sebuah momen konfirmasi sensasional pada abad ke-19 tentang konfirmasi ilmu pengetahuan dan dramatis dari teori gravitasional pakar Newton. Menurut François Arago, Le Verrier telah menemukan sebuah planet "dengan sebuah poin dari penanya".
