Mithras

Misteri Mithraik adalah agama misteri yang dipraktikkan di Kekaisaran Romawi dari sekitar abad ke-1 sampai 4 SM. Nama dewa Persia Mithra (proto-Indo-Iran Mitra), diadaptasi ke dalam bahasa Yunani sebagai Mithras, dikaitkan dengan citra yang baru dan khas. Para penulis pada periode Kekaisaran Romawi merujuk pada agama misteri ini dengan frase yang dapat di artikan kedalam bahasa Inggris sebagai Misteri Mithras atau Misteri Bangsa Persia; sejarawan modern menyebutnya sebagai Mithraisme, atau kadang-kadang Mithraisme Romawi. Misteri tersebut populer di militer Romawi.

Penyembah Mithras memiliki suatu sistem yang kompleks atas tujuh nilai inisiasi, dengan makanan ritual. Para inisiat menyebut diri mereka syndexioi, mereka yang "dipersatukan dengan jabat tangan". Mereka bertemu di kuil bawah tanah (disebut mithraea), yang terlestarikan dalam jumlah besar. Kultus tersebut tampaknya memiliki pusat di Roma.

Banyak temuan arkeologi, termasuk tempat-tempat pertemuan, monumen dan artefak, telah memberikan kontribusi untuk pengetahuan modern mengenai Mithraisme di seluruh Kekaisaran Romawi. Adegan ikonik Mithras menunjukkan dia dilahirkan dari perawan yang lahir tanggal 25 desember, menyembelih banteng, dan berbagi perjamuan dengan dewa Sol (Matahari). Sekitar 420 situs telah menghasilkan materi yang berhubungan dengan kultus tersebut. Di antaranya ditemukan sekitar 1000 prasasti, 700 adegan pembunuhan banteng (tauroctony), dan sekitar 400 monumen lainnya. Diperkirakan terdapat setidaknya 680-690 mithraea di Roma. Tidak ada teologi atau narasi tertulis dari agama tersebut yang terselamatkan, dengan informasi terbatas yang berasal dari prasasti, dan hanya referensi singkat atau sekadarnya dalam literatur Latin dan Yunani. Interpretasi dari bukti fisik tersebut tetap bermasalah dan diperdebatkan.

Bangsa Romawi sendiri menganggap misteri tersebut bersumber dari Persia atau Zoroaster. Namun sejak awal 1970-an keilmuan yang dominan telah mencatat ketidakmiripan antara ibadah-Mithra Persia dan misteri Mithraik Romawi, dan misteri Mithras umumnya sekarang dipandang sebagai produk yang berbeda dari dunia keagamaan Imperium Romawi. Dalam konteks ini, Mithraisme kadang-kadang dipandang sebagai saingan dari Kekristenan awal, dengan kesamaan seperti pembebas-penyelamat, hierarki para ahli (uskup agung, uskup, imam), makan bersama, dan perjuangan keras dari Kebaikan dan Kejahatan (pembunuhan-banteng/penyaliban).
