Koloni pada zaman kuno adalah kota-negara yang didirikan dari kota-induk ("metropolis"-nya), bukan dari sebuah teritorial besar. Ikatan antara koloni dan metropolis-nya masih sering tertutup, tetapi menghimpun bentuk spesifik. Namun, tak seperti zaman kolonialisme Eropa pada awal dan akhir era modern, koloni kuno biasanya berdaulat dan memerintah sendiri dari penaungnya.
