iPod Touch merupakan iPod pertama menggunakan teknologi nirkabel yang memiliki akses langsung ke iTunes Store dan App Store Apple sehingga memudahkan pengguna untuk membeli dan mengunduh secara langsung konten ke dalam iPod tanpa perlu menghubungkannya dengan komputer.
Perusahaan Apple Inc. terus memperbarui kapasitas penyimpanan memori dan menambahkan fitur-fitur baru dari generasi satu ke generasi yang lainnya. Kini, iPod Touch terbaru adalah iPod Touch generasi kelima (5G) yang menyediakan kapasitas penyimpanan memori sebesar 16 GB, 32 GB dan 64 GB. Generasi kedua (2G) dari iPod Touch kini masih tersedia dengan penambahan fitur baru dari iPod Touch generasi pertama (1G) yaitu, kontrol volume eksternal, bagian belakang yang berkontur, Bluetooth untuk bermain game antar teman dan kemampuan untuk menyambungkan ke mikrofon. Kini, iPod Touch hadir dalam kapasitas penyimpanan sebesar 8GB, 16 GB, 32 GB dan 64 GB.
Desain Sunting
Secara fisik, iPod Touch berbentuk persegi panjang bersudut tumpul dengan layar sentuh besar dari bahan anti gores serta tombol halaman utama di bagian bawah dan dilengkapi dengan papan ketik qwerty pada layar. iPod Touch memiliki layar sentuh 3,5 inci yang dapat menampilkan foto dan dilengkapi dengan teknologi pinch to zoom sehingga pengguna hanya perlu menggunakan dua jari untuk membesarkan atau mengecilkan gambar.
Beda dari iPod versi lain, untuk mengunci iPod pengguna hanya perlu menggeser tampilan pengunci dari kiri ke kanan untuk menonaktifkan penguncian. Layar utama dari iPod touch terdiri dari beberapa ikon aplikasi yang tersedia. Diantaranya adalah, Musik, Video, Foto, iTunes, Safari, Youtube, Kalender, Kontak, Penunjuk waktu, Kalkulator dan Setting.
Perangkat keras Sunting
iPod Touch menggunakan baterai lithium yang dapat diisi ulang dan mampu memainkan video selama 6 jam dan 36 jam audio. Untuk pengisian ulang dapat digunakan sambungan USB 2.0 yang terhubung ke sistem komputer atau dengan menggunakan adaptor daya. Selain untuk pengisian ulang, sambungan USB juga berguna untuk mensinkronisasi koleksi lagu dan memprogram iPod dari komputer.
Perangkat lunak Sunting
iTunes merupakan perangkat lunak yang dirancang untuk bekerja dengan iPod dan memudahkan pengguna untuk mengatur koleksi musik di iPod melalui komputer. iTunes dapat secara langsung mensikronisasi sebuah iPod dengan seluruh koleksi lagu yang dimiliki penggunannya pada saat iPod tersebut disambung dengan sebuah komputer.
Untuk memudahkan pengguna dalam mengakses web, perusahaan Apple menyediakan penjelajah web Safari untuk berselancar di dunia maya dengan modifikasi dan penyesuaian pada tampilan (vertikal dan horizontal). Safari juga mendukung kemungkinan untuk membuka banyak halaman pada saat yang sama . Perpindahan antar halaman dapat dilakukan dengan menyentuh satu tombol terlebih dahulu dan kemudian akan muncul ikon dari semua halaman sehingga kita dapat milih dengan cara menggeser ke kiri dan kanan untuk memilih halaman yang mau dibuka. Kotak alamat URL akan secara otomatis sembunyi untuk memaksimalkan layar.
Teknologi Wi-Fi yang disediakan di dalam iPod Touch merupakan manfaat dan kelebihan yang dimiliki oleh iPod Touch dibandingkan dengan iPod versi lainnya. Dengan kapabilitas Wi-Fi, pengguna iPod Touch dapat secara langsung mengakses web atau menuju iTunes Store dimana pengguna dapat memilih jutaan lagu, film, program televisi, buku audio dan podcast gratis. Selain dari itu, iPod Touch memiliki 50% kecepatan lebih dari iPod versi lainnya.
Namun, dalam paket penjualan iPod Touch tidak disediakan CD perangkat lunak program iTunes sehingga iTunes yang memakan memori 500MB harus diunduh secara langsung dari web. Di samping itu, iPod Touch tidak dapat difungsikan sebagai tempat penyimpanan eksternal karena apabila dihubungkan dengan komputer menggunakan kabel USB, komputer mengenali sebagai kamera iPod atau peralatan gambar. Hal ini kemudian membuat pengelolaan berkas musik/video tanpa menggunakan iTunes menjadi tidak mungkin. Tidak adanya fitur bluetooth untuk bertukar informasi atau berkas mengindikasikan ketidakmungkinan bertukar informasi atau berkas tanpa menghubungkan iPod Touch ke komputer.

iPod Touch membutuhkan komputer untuk konfigurasi awal dan dalam penambahan lagu serta pemrogramannya. Perusahaan Apple menghendaki iTunes dipasangkan pada sistem operasi Mac OS X atau Windows. Pada kedua sistem operasi tersebut, iPod Touch harus dihubungkan melalui sambungan USB. Saat pertama kali iPod Touch dinyalakan, sebuah tampilan grafik “connect cable to iTunes” akan muncul secara kontinu sampai iPod Touch terhubungkan ke komputer yang mengoperasikan iTunes. | The second generation iPod Touch featured a new tapered chrome back with Nike+ functionality, volume buttons, and built-in speaker added, It was unveiled on September 9, 2008. It originally shipped with iPhone OS 2.0 and App Store access. Bluetooth support was added with iPhone OS 3.0, which required an upgrade fee. The 2nd generation comes with the chrome frame seen on the iPhone 3G, making the two almost identical when viewed from the front. However, there are some notable differences, as there is no speaker above the screen, no silent/ringer switch, the back is metal, and the sleep/wake button is on the other side.
