Seorang demokrat radikal dan sosialis demokrat, West menarik kontribusi intelektualnya dari banyak tradisi, termasuk Kekristenan, gereja kulit hitam, Marxisme, neopragmatisme, dan transendentalisme. Di antara bukunya yang paling berpengaruh adalah Race Matters (1994) dan Democracy Matters (2004).
