Williams lahir di London pada 1886, sebagai putra tunggal dari (Richard) Walter Stansby Williams (1848-1929), seorang jurnalis dan koresponden bisnis luar negeri (untuk firma pengimporan, menulis dalam bahasa Prancis dan Jerman), yang merupakan seorang kontributor cerita dan artikel 'giat dan bernilai' untuk beberapa majalah populer, dan istrinya Mary (née Wall, saudari eklesiologis dan sejarawan J.
