Academy Awards ke-9 diselenggarakan pada tanggal 4 Maret 1937, di Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles, California. Pembawa acara perhelatan ini adalah George Jessel; didukung oleh pergelaran musik Victor Young Orchestra, di mana saat itu menampilkan juga Spike Jones yang memainkan drums. Upacara ini menandai kali pertama diberikannya penghargaan untuk kategori Aktor Pendukung Terbaik dan Aktris Pendukung Terbaik.

My Man Godfrey menjadi film pertama yang masuk daftar became the first film yang dinominasikan untuk semua kategori pemeranan, tetapi tak satu kategori pun yang meraih kemenangan. Film ini merupakan sau-satunya film yang tidak dinominasikan untuk kategori Film Terbaik, dan kalah di semua kategori yang dinominasikan, sampai dengan Sunset Boulevard dalam perhelatan Academy Awards ke-23.

Melalui kemenangannya dalam kategori Rekaman Suara Terbaik untuk film San Francisco, Douglas Shearer menjadi orang pertama yang memenangi penghargaan secara berturut-turut (menyusul kemenangan di kategori yang sama dalam film Naughty Marietta tahun sebelumnya).
