Craig meraih gelar Ph.D. pada University of Birmingham tahun 1977. Ia mengajar pada Trinity Evangelical Divinity School dan Westmont College. Ia telah menjabat sebagai Research Professor of Philosophy pada Talbot School of Theology di Biola University, La Mirada, California sejak tahun 1996.

Craig meraih gelar B.A. dalam bidang komunikasi dari Wheaton College, Illinois pada tahun 1971. Ia meraih dua gelar Master (M.A.) dari Trinity Evangelical Divinity School di Deerfield, Illinois pada tahun 1975, satu dalam bidang filsafat agama dan lainnya dalam bidang sejarah eklesiastikal serta dalam Sejarah Pemikiran Kristen. Ia mendapatkan gelar Ph.D. dalam filsafat di bawah bimbingan John Hick pada University of Birmingham, Inggris, pada tahun 1977 dan gelar D.Theol. di bawah bimbingan Wolfhart Pannenberg pada University of Munich, Jerman, pada tahun 1984.

Dari tahun 1980 sampai 1986 ia menjadi assistant professor of philosophy pada Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
