Istilah Urmonotheismus (Jerman untuk "monoteisme purba") atau monoteisme primitif mengekspresikan hipotesis sebuah Urreligion monoteistik, di saat agama-agama non-monoteistik terkikis. Pandangan evolusioner terhadap perkembangan agama secara diametris berlawanan dengan pandangan evolusioner lain terhadap agaama: hipotesis tersebut menyatakan bahwa agama berproses dari bentuk-bentuk sederhana menjadi kompleks: mula-mula pra-animisme, kemudian animisme, totemisme, politeisme dan akhirnya monoteisme (lihat Antropologi agama).
