University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg adalah universitas riset negeri multikampus Afrika Selatan yang terletak di wilayah utara pusat Johannesburg. Universitas ini lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Wits University. Universitas ini berakar dari industri pertambangan, sebagaimana Johannesburg dan Witwatersrand. Didirikan tahun 1896 dengan nama South African School of Mines di Kimberley, Witwatersrand adalah universitas tertua ketiga yang masih beroperasi di Afrika Selatan, setelah University of Cape Town (tahun 1829), dan Stellenbosch University (tahun 1866).

Pada tahun 1959, Extension of University Education Act memberlakukan registrasi ketat bagi mahasiswa berkulit hitam nyaris sepanjang zaman apartheid. Meski begitu, banyak pemimpin berkulit hitam terkenal yang lulus dari universitas ini. Universitas ini terdesegregasi sebelum penghapusan apartheid tahun 1990. Sejumlah kritikus apartheid yang paling provokatif, baik keturunan Eropa atau Afrika, pernah menjadi mahasiswa sekaligus lulusan universitas ini.

Universitas memiliki 27.934 mahasiswa per 2010, 4.566 di antaranya tinggal di 18 asrama kampus. Per 2010, 67,7% mahasiswanya mengambil studi sarjana, sedangkan 32,3% sisanya pascasarjana.
