Awal didirikan Sunting
The WB diresmikan pada tanggal 1 Januari 1995 sebagai stasiun televisi terestrial oleh Jamie Kellner. Pada awal pendiriannya, tahun 1995, The WB hanya menyiarkan acara komedi saja. Saat itu The WB hanya mengudara 2 jam. Salah satunya dengan bekerjasama dengan Tribune Broadcasting. The WB juga menyiarkan acara anak-anak dalam bentuk blok acara Kids' WB.
Dengan maskot utamanya, Michigan J. Frog, The WB ditargetkan untuk pemirsa anak-anak dan remaja. Setiap hari, The WB menayangkan acara-acara hiburan. The WB memulai siaran untuk hari Minggu sejak tahun 1996.
Memasuki target baru Sunting
Dalam perkembangannya stasiun ini berkembang menjadi stasiun untuk segala usia, sama dengan stasiun televisi yang lain. The WB memulai usahanya menyiarkan acara drama pada tahun 1997. Acara drama pertamanya adalah Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Menyusul Felicity dan Charmed
Dalam usahanya menjadi stasiun televisi untuk semua umur, stasiun ini sering kali harus bersaing dengan UPN. Pada tahun 2001, memulai drama Smallvile, serial Superman yang penuh aksi.
Kontroversi Sunting
Sadar karena maskotnya bukan mencerminkan fokus untuk segala usia, stasiun ini resmi memecat Michigan J. Frog sebagai maskot pada tanggal 22 Juni 2005, dan jabatan maskot diserahkan kepada Bugs Bunny. Banyak kegagalan, menyebabkan stasiun ini kurang memperhatikan segala usia, dsb.
Stasiun ini juga pernah dikritik pihak-pihak konservatif dan liberal yang mengatakan bahwa The WB tidak adil dalam penayangan dan jumlah pemirsa hanya 91.66%.
Penghentian siaran Sunting
Pada tanggal 24 Januari 2006, CBS Corporation dan Time Warner mengumumkan rencana untuk menutup UPN dan The WB dan meluncurkan jaringan baru, The CW di tempat mereka.
Dalam keputusan ini, Bugs Bunny akan ditetapkan sebagai maskot The CW. Pada masa akhir penayangannya, The WB menyiarkan acara-acara TV terkenal, yakni:
- 17:00 - Felicity
- 18:00 - Angel
- 19:00 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (episode 2 jam)
- 20:00 - Dawson's Creek

Iklannya menyiarkan promo tentang gambar-gambar opromo dari masa lalu. Gambar terakhir menunjukkan bayangan dari mantan maskot The WB, Michigan J. Frog, yang mengucapkan terima kasih karena tayang selama 11 tahun dan menutup jaringan tersebut.
Pada tahun 2008, The WB resmi diluncurkan ulang sebagai jaringan online.
