Perusahaan ini didirikan oleh Henry Jarvis Raymond dan George Jones di New York City. Edisi pertama koran The New York Times terbitan 18 September 1851 bertuliskan: "Hari ini kami menerbitkan edisi pertama New-York Daily Times, dan kami berencana menerbitkannya setiap hari (kecuali Minggu) sampai waktu yang tidak ditentukan."
