Ular Garter adalah sebutan untuk jenis-jenis ular dari genus Thamnophis. Ular-ular ini terdapat di Amerika Utara dan Tengah.

Pengenalan sunting

Panjang tubuh ular Garter bervariasi antara 46 cm sampai 137 cm (0.46 - 1.37 meter) dan berat tubuh rata-rata mencapai 140 gram (1.4 kg).

Ular Garter menghuni berbagai macam habitat, di antaranya hutan dan padang rumput (prairi). Ular Garter hidup dan berkelana tidak jauh dari sumber air. Makanan utama ular Garter adalah amfibi, kadal, serta beberapa jenis hewan pengerat dan cacing.

Hibernasi dan reproduksi sunting

Di wilayah yang beriklim sejuk, ular Garter berhibernasi dalam sebuah sarang di celah bebatuan atau celah lain dan berkumpul dengan jumlah ular yang sangat banyak. Satu sarang ular Garter dapat ditempati hingga ribuan ekor ular.

Ular Garter melakukan perkembangbiakan ketika cuaca hangat. Ular-ular ini berkumpul di tempat terbuka, dimana ular jantan yang jumlahnya banyak harus berdesakan satu sama lain untuk memperebutkan ular betina yang berjumlah sedikit. Biasanya, ular-ular jantan akan keluar dari sarang mereka terlebih dahulu, sedangkan ular betina menampakkan diri belakangan. Ular Garter betina mampu menghasilkan aroma untuk memikat ular-ular jantan agar mendekat, di mana ular-ular jantan itu kemudian saling berdesak-desakan memperebutkan ular betina. Kadang-kadang setiap ular betina diperebutkan sampai 25 ekor ular jantan. Setelah proses perkawinan selesai, ular betina meninggalkan tempat perkawinan untuk mencari makanan dan tempat mengeluarkan calon anak-anaknya. Ular Garter berkembangbiak dengan melahirkan (ovovivipar).
