Bauer memulai kariernya di PBS, memerankan Joe Peña, anak imigran Kuba dalam ¿Qué Pasa, USA? (1977–1979) dan mungkin peran paling terkenalnya adalah sebagai gembong narkoba Kuba Manolo "Manny" Ribera dalam seri kejahatan tahun 1983, Scarface, di mana ia menjadi teman main Al Pacino dan Michelle Pfeiffer.
