Root lahir di Sarasota, Florida, anak dari Leona Estelle dan Rolland Clair Root, seorang pengawas konstruksi. Root lulus dari Vero Beach High School di Vero Beach, Florida. Dia menerima gelar AA dari University of Florida, dan magang kerja di program seni peran BFA.

Root mendapatkan peran terakhir dalam dua musim dari serial The West Wing sebagai konsultan kampanye anggota dewan dari Partai Republik, Bob Mayer. Dia juga bermain sebagai Milton Waddams dalam Office Space, sebagai Gordon Pibb dalam Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, sebagai Suds dalam Leatherheads, dan sebagai Judd Apatow dalamDrillbit Taylor. Root sangat dikenal dalam Coen Brothers. Dia tampil dalam O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Ladykillers, dan No Country For Old Men. Kevin Smith menulis peran dalam Jersey Girl khusus untuk Root.
