McHattie lahir di Antigonish, Nova Scotia, pada tanggal 3 Februari 1946 (tahun kelahirannya juga disebut sebagai 1945, 1947, dan 1948). Alumni American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Dia telah muncul di banyak film dan acara televisi termasuk Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Enterprise, Highlander: The Series, dan American Playhouse's Life Under Water (1989).
