SMS Emden adalah kapal jenis Dresden kedua dan terakhir yang dibangun untuk Angkatan Laut Kekaisaran Jerman (Kaiserliche Marine). Kapal ini dinamai dari kota Emden. Kapal SMS Emden dipasang lunas di Kaiserliche Werft (Galangan Kapal Kekaisaran) di Danzig pada tahun 1906. Kapal ini sendiri diluncurkan pada tanggal 26 Mei 1908 dan mulai berlayar pada tanggal 10 Juli 1909. Kapal ini memiliki satu kapal saudara, yaitu SMS Dresden. Seperti kapal penjelajah kelas Königsberg yang merupakan kapal pendahulunya, kapal Emden dipersenjatai dengan sepuluh senapan 10,5 cm dan dua torpedo.

Emden tergabung dalam Skuadron Asia Timur Jerman dan berpangkalan di Tsingtao di wilayah Konsesi Teluk Kiautschou di Tiongkok. Pada tahun 1913, kapal ini mulai dipimpin oleh Karl von Müller. Setelah dimulainya Perang Dunia I, kapal ini merebut kapal uap Rusia dan mengubahnya menjadi kapal penjarah Cormoran. Emden sempat ditugaskan untuk melakukan penyerangan di Samudra Hindia, dan setelah misi ini selesai kapal ini kembali bergabung dengan Skuadron Asia Timur. Pada tanggal 28 Oktober 1914, Emden melancarkan serangan mendadak ke kota Penang, dan selama Pertempuran Penang kapal ini berhasil menenggelamkan kapal penjelajah Rusia Zhemchug dan kapal penghancur Prancis Mousquet.

Müller lalu membawa kapal Emden ke Kepulauan Cocos dan mendaratkan pelaut-pelaut untuk menghancurkan fasilitas milik Britania. Di situ, kapal Emden diserang oleh kapal penjelajah Australia HMAS Sydney. Serangan kapal Australia yang lebih kuat daripada Emden mengakibatkan kerusakan pada kapal ini, sehingga Müller terpaksa mengkaramkan kapalnya agar tidak tenggelam. Dari jumlah kru sebanyak 376 orang, 133 tewas dalam pertempuran. Sebagian besar orang yang selamat ditawan oleh musuh, sementara pasukan yang mendarat di Kepulauan Cocos yang dipimpin oleh merebut sebuah kapal skuner lama dan kemudian kembali ke Jerman. Bangkai kapal Emden lalu hancur akibat ombak dan kepingan-kepingannya diambil pada tahun 1950an.
