Kehidupan awal Sunting

Barthelmess lahir di New York City pada 1895 sebagai putra dari Caroline Harris, seorang aktris panggung, dan Alfred W. Barthelmess. Ayahnya meninggal ketika ia baru berusia satu tahun. Bersama dengan ibunya, ia dibesarkan di dunia teater. Ia dididik di Akademi Militer Sungai Hudson di Nyack dan Trinity College di Hartford, Connecticut. Ia beberapa kali akting di kolese dan produksi amatir lainnya. Pada 1919, ia menjalani lima tahun dalam eksperiensi perusahaan stok.
