Pytheas

Pytheas dari Massalia (Yunani Kuno: Πυθέας ὁ Μασσαλιώτης Pythéas ho Massaliōtes; Bahasa Latin: Pytheas Massiliensis; abad ke-4 SM), merupakan seorang geografer Yunani dan penjelajah dari koloni Yunani Massalia (yang sekarang Marseille). Ia berlayar eksplorasi ke Eropa barat laut pada sekitar tahun 325 SM, namun deskripsinya tentang hal itu, yang dikenal luas di zaman antik, belum bertahan.

Dalam perjalanan ini ia mengelilingi dan mengunjungi sebagian besar wilayah Pulau Britania Raya. Ia adalah orang pertama yang mencatat untuk menggambarkan Matahari tengah malam. Keadaan teoretis dari Zona Dingin, dan zona beriklim sendang malam sangat singkat di musim panas dan matahari tidak terbenam pada titik balik matahari musim panas, sudah diketahui. Demikian pula, laporan tentang negara salju dan kegelapan abadi (negara Hyperborea) telah sampai di Mediterania beberapa abad sebelumnya. Pytheas adalah pengunjung ilmiah pertama dan reporter Arktik, Tudung es kutub, dan Jermanik. Rekonstruksi jalur yang dilalui Pytheas bermula dari Massalia (Marseille) berlayar melalui Selat Gibraltar.
