Lagu interpolasi elemen "Head Like a Hole", single tahun 1989 oleh band rock Amerika Serikat, Nine Inch Nails. Oleh karena itu, "On a Roll" mengkreditkan pentolan Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor sebagai penulis lagu dan diproduksi oleh trio produksi The Invisible Men. Pencipta Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker mendapat izin dari Reznor untuk menggunakan lagu tersebut dan kemudian menulis ulang liriknya menjadi "uber-positif" untuk dijadikan penjajaran dengan "konsep gelap" dari episode tersebut. Lagu ini ditulis dalam kunci G Major secara umum dengan tempo 122 ketukan per menit. Buzzfeed mencatat pengamatan online bahwa bagian chorus lagu ini, "Hey yeah woah-ho", terdengar seperti "Hey I'm a hoe" dan menggambarkannya sebagai contoh Mondegreen.
