Fay lahir di Joliet, Illinois. Pada awal 1980-an, Fay menjadi salah satu pemeran utama di The Second City. Ia pertama kali tampil di televisi melalui seri televisi Ohara (1987).
Kiprah Fay di pertelevisian berlangsung sepanjang 1980-an dan 1990-an. Ia menjadi pemeran tamu di berbagai acara seperti thirtysomething, Roseanne, Mad About You, Seinfeld, Dharma and Greg, Gilmore Girls, Suddenly Susan, Charmed, dan Freaks and Geeks.
