Biografi sunting

Cohn lahir di New York City dari pasangan Goodman Cohn dan Jennie Nathan. Orang tuanya adalah imigran Yahudi. Ia menikah dengan Anna Messing di Brooklyn pada tahun 1916. Ia mulai bekerja sebagai editor film pada awal tahun 1910-an, meskipun seperti kebanyakan editor pada masa itu, ia tidak diberi penghargaan di layar atas usahanya. Akhirnya keluarganya pindah dari New York City ke Los Angeles, tempat dia melanjutkan karirnya.

Ia adalah anggota pendiri Society of Motion Picture Film Editors (pendahulu dari Motion Picture Editors Guild) pada tahun 1937; sejak awal, dia menjabat sebagai bendahara. Pada tahun 1930-an, ia mulai bekerja sebagai produser pada proyek-proyek, meskipun penyuntingan tampaknya terus menjadi fokus utamanya. Selama masa ini, ia dipuji karena mempelopori "change-over", sebuah teknik yang memungkinkan para proyektor tetap menjalankan film tanpa berhenti untuk mengganti gulungan.
