Klub ini resmi dibubarkan pada 16 september 2020, karena masalah keuangan. Pada 13 oktober 2020 klub diakusisi oleh pengusaha lokal, Robert Smethurst. Klub ini kemudian berganti nama menjadi Macclesfield Football Club

Sejarah sunting

Macclesfield Town FC adalah kesebelasan kebanggaan kota setempat. Mereka sempat bermain di Liga 2 Inggris atau kompetisi tingkat keempat di Inggris. Saat ini, Macclesfield Town berkompetisi di Conference National atau kompetisi tingkat kelima.

Dua tahun silam, Macclesfield sempat mengalami masalah finansial. Kesebelasan yang berjuluk The Silkmen karena Macclesfield dikenal sebagai penghasil sutra terbesar di Inggris mesti memasang pengumuman yang terbilang janggal.

The Silkman membutuhkan 100 ribu poundsterling pada akhir Agustus 2013 untuk bisa bertahan. Untuk itu, mereka membuka "lowongan" bagi fans yang berusia 18-35 tahun untuk bermain di Macclesfield dengan membayar 20 ribu pounds. Calon pemohon nantinya diseleksi dan mendapat jaminan setidaknya bermain selama sepuluh menit di liga atau turnamen.

Pemohon yang berhasil pun akan diberi nomor punggung, kostum kandang, tandang, serta perlengkapan latihan. Mereka pun akan berlatih bersama tim utama selama sepekan, serta diikutsertakan dalam foto kesebelasan.

"Aku pikir ini adalah kesempatan emas bagi seseorang yang ingin menapaki karier dan terjun langsung dalam sejarah sepak bola Inggris", ucap Scott, "Jika kami bermain 1-1 dalam 10 menit terakhir kami tak akan mengambil risiko. Tapi jika kami unggul 3-0 dan manajer John Askey merasa sudah cukup baik, maka pemain tersebut bisa bermain. Ini akan menjadi pengalaman yang luar biasa."

Pada akhirnya tidak ada anggota masyarakat atau penggemar yang benar-benar melamar "pekerjaan" ini. Bukan mereka tak mampu atau tak tertarik, melainkan karena pihak klub yang membatalkan tawaran tersebut sebulan kemudian.Dalam situs resmi klub dijelaskan bahwa tawaran tersebut hanyalah satu dari sekian banyak "ide inovatif" untuk mendapatkan dana cepat.

"Kini kami mengetahui bahwa kontrol apapun yang dibuat, itu menciptakan kemungkinan mengubah hasil pertandingan kompetitif dan melangkahi batas penghormatan terhadap integritas pertandingan. Oleh karena itu, kami menarik tawaran dan ingin meminta maaf dengan terus terang kepada otoritas sepak bola dan Football Conference untuk kesalahan yang kami buat" tulis pernyataan tersebut.

Macclesfield sebelumnya dipaksa untuk menjual Stadion Moss Rose yang berkapasitas 6 ribuan penonton. Hal tersebut dilakukan untuk menghindari mereka dari denda. Penggemar pun diminta untuk ikut membeli saham dan terlibat menjalankan klub. Mereka sangat membutuhkan 100 ribu pounds untuk menaikkan status klub sebagai tim profesional.

Macclesfield promosi ke Football League pada 1997 dan terdegradasi ke Conference Premier pada 2012. Selama sejarahnya, mereka pernah bertanding dengan sejumlah rival yang pernah masuk ke Premier League dan Divisi Championship seperti Manchester City, Wigan Athletic, dan Preston North End.

Patungan untuk Beli Pemain sunting

Awal Oktober tahun ini, Macclesfield kembali melibatkan fans mereka untuk mengumpulkan dana senilai 10 ribu pounds. Uang itu akan digunakan untuk membeli sejumlah pemain baru. Tanpa diduga, seorang penggemar dari luar negeri memberi 15 ribu pounds pada Agustus lalu untuk tujuan yang sama. Sang donor baik hati itu pun bersedia memberi 10 ribu pounds tambahan asalkan tim mampu mengumpulkan 10 ribu pounds lainnya dari fans.

Dalam tiga pekan, 74 penggemar telah mengumpulkan 4230 pounds, termasuk 500 pounds dari Andy Thomas yang tinggal di Indonesia Jika 10 ribu pounds bisa tercapai, ini artinya Macclesfield Town telah mendapatkan 35 ribu pounds untuk bisa membeli pemain baru.

Pemilik klub Mark Blower pun merasa senang dengan kampanye tersebut. Menurutnya adalah sebuah hal fantastis saat fans bekerja sama dengan tim untuk mengumpulkan uang. "Kami membangun skuat yang baik tapi ini adalah liga yang keras. Donasi ini akan membantu John Askey untuk meningkatkan skuatnya dan memberinya kemungkinan terbaik untuk sukses," tutur Blower.
