Nama keluarganya berasal dari kota asalnya. Ia adalah ayahanda Lucas Cranach Muda (1515 - 1586). Ia telah dianggap sebagai seniman Jerman paling sukses di masanya.
Venerasi Sunting
Gereja Lutheran memperingati Cranach sebagai seorang Kristen yang hebat pada tanggal 6 April bersama dengan Dürer, dan kemungkinan Matthias Grünewald atau Burgkmair. Kalender liturgi Gereja Episkopal (A.S.) menghormati Cranach, Dürer dan Grünewald pada tanggal 5 Agustus.
