Faderman dibesarkan oleh ibunya, Mary, dan bibinya, Rae. Pada tahun 1914, ibunya beremigrasi dari sebuah shtetl di Latvia ke New York City, dan berencana untuk mengirim anggota keluarganya yang lain. Bibinya, Rae, datang pada tahun 1923, tetapi anggota keluarga lainnya terbunuh selama pemusnahan orang Yahudi Eropa oleh Hitler, dan Mary menyalahkan dirinya sendiri karena tidak dapat menyelamatkan mereka.
