Leigh mengawali kariernya sebagai seorang remaja yang menjadi bintang tamu di beberapa acara televisi pada tahun 1970-an. Ia tampil perdana di dunia perfilman sebagai pemeran tokoh Stacy Hamilton dalam film Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Sejak saat itu ia terus memerankan tokoh-tokoh dewasa dan mendapat pujian atas penampilannya di film Miami Blues dan Last Exit to Brooklyn tahun 1990. Tahun 1991, ia tampil di Backdraft besutan Ron Howard, dan pada tahun 1992, ia membintangi film drama Single White Female.
