Invictus

"Invictus" adalah puisi pendek yang ditulis oleh penyair Inggris William Ernest Henley (1849–1903). Ditulis pada tahun 1875 dan diterbitkan pada tahun 1888 dalam buku kumpulan puisinya jilid pertama, Book of Verses, di mana ia merupakan puisi keempat di bab Life and Death (Echoes). Puisi tersebut sebenarnya tanpa judul. Judul "Invictus" ditambahkan oleh editor Arthur Quiller-Couch ketika puisi tersebut dimasukan ke dalam The Oxford Book of English Verse.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Dari malam yang menyelimutiku,
Segelap terowongan dari kutub ke kutub,
Aku berterima kasih kepada Tuhan manapun,
Atas jiwaku yang tak terkalahkan.

Pada kondisi jatuh dalam cengkeraman,
Aku belum meringis maupun menangis kencang,
Ketika berada di bawah hantaman-hantaman gada,
Kepalaku berdarah, tetapi tidak tertunduk.

Dibalik tempat kemurkaan dan kesedihan ini,
Samar-samar yang tampak hanyalah bayangan kengerian,
Dan masih juga bertahun-tahun bahaya,
Menjumpa, dan akan menjumpa, ku tak takut.

Tak penting sebagaimana ketat gerbangnya,
Sebagaimana dibebani oleh hukuman gulungan suratnya,
Aku adalah tuan dari takdirku,
Aku adalah kapten dari jiwaku.
