Identitas nasional Inggris sebagai suku bangsa atau kelompok etnis asal Inggris berkembang pada Abad Pertengahan dianggap bermula dari penyatuan Kerajaan Inggris pada abad ke-10, namun secara eksplisit pada abad ke-11 setelah Penaklukan Norman, saat bangsa Inggris meraih status penduduk pribumi.

Dari abad kedelapan belas, istilah 'English' (Inggris) dan 'British' (Britania) mulai dipakai secara bergantian oleh beberapa orang Inggris.
