Halberstam lahir di Yonkers, New York dan awalnya tinggal di Winsted, Connecticut, (sekelas dengan Ralph Nader). Pada tahun 1955, dia lulus dari Universitas Harvard dengan gelar sarjana kesenian, dan bekerja sebagai editor managing di The Harvard Crimson.
