Aiello adalah anak kelima dari enam bersaudara, lahir di West 68th Street, Manhattan, putra dari Frances Pietrocova, seorang penjahit, dan Daniel Louis Aiello, seorang buruh, yang meninggalkan keluarga setelah istrinya kehilangan penglihatannya dan kemudian menjadi buta. Selama bertahun-tahun, Aiello secara terbuka mengutuk ayahnya tetapi keduanya berdamai pada tahun 1993, meskipun Aiello memendam kekesalan atas perilaku ayahnya. Ia adalah keturunan Italia.
