Pada 10 April 2010, pesawat Tupolev Tu-154M yang mengangkut Presiden Polandia Lech Kaczyński, anggota pemerintahan dan dewan legislatif Polandia, dan juga komandan Angkatan Bersenjata Polandia, jatuh di dekat Bandar Udara Smolensk-North, menewaskan semua penumpang di pesawat. Para penumpang awalnya berniat untuk menghadiri peringatan 70 tahun peristiwa pembantaian Katyn.
Beberapa orang yang tewas dalam kecelakaan ini adalah istri Presiden Kaczyński, Maria Kaczyńska, mantan presiden dalam pengasingan Ryszard Kaczorowski, kepala Bank Nasional Polandia, dan lain sebagainya.
