Dia dikenal karena penggambarannya Ash Williams di Sam Raimi Evil Dead franchise, dimulai dengan film pendek 1978 Within the Woods. Groves High School, keduanya menjadi teman yang sangat baik dan mulai membuat film bersama. Campbell akan terus hadir Western Michigan University sementara dia terus mengerjakan karir aktingnya. Campbell dan Raimi berkolaborasi dalam versi 30 menit Super 8 yang pertama Evil Dead film, berjudul Within the Woods, yang awalnya digunakan untuk menarik investor.
