Bill Evans (16 Agustus 1929 – 15 September 1980) yang memiliki nama asli William John Evans, adalah seorang pianis jazz asal Amerika. Ia dikenal dengan gaya harmonisasi dalam bermain piano yang impresionis, menemukan pemikiran baru dalam menginterpertasi lagu-lagu tradisi jazz, dan memiliki ciri khas pada pola ritmik yang berdiri sendiri yaitu permainan harmonisasi paralel yang setiap ujungnya diambil dari melodi dasar lagu yang ia mainkan. Ia sangat banyak memengaruhi pemain-pemain jazz modern saat ini seperti Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Lyle Mays, bahkan hingga Brad Mehldau. Awal karier sunting
Bill Evans dilahirkan di Plainfield, New Jersey, Amerika Serikat, ibunya masih berdarah Rusia dan ayahnya masih keturunan dari Welsh. Ia menerima pembelajaran musik pertama kalinya di gereja oleh ibunya sendiri. Ibu Evans adalah seorang pianis amatir yang tertarik dengan beberapa komposer klasik modern, dan Evans mulai les piano klasik pada usia 6 tahun. Pada usia 13 tahun, Ia telah pandai memainkan flute dan juga bisa bermain biola. Pada usia 12 tahun, Evans telah bergabung bersama band asuhan kakaknya Harry, yang bernama Buddy Valentino band. Pada usia ini ia sudah mampu menginterpretasikan musik klasik, tetapi ia tidak bisa berimprovisasi. Awalnya, ia selalu bermain dengan tepat sesuai apa yang tertulis dalam lembar partitur, namun segera ia berusaha untuk bisa berimprovisasi, ia belajar bagaimana tentang harmonisasi dari setiap lagu-lagu yang ia mainkan, dan bagaimana cara mengubahnya. Ia sering memainkan musik untuk mengiringi tari dan juga jazz di rumahnya untuk beberapa waktu. Pada akhir 1940-an, ia mulai bermain boogie woogie di berbagai klub jazz di New York City.
Pada tahun 1950 Ia mendapatkan beasiswa belajar musik di Southeastern Louisiana University, ia memainkan karya Beethoven Piano Concerto no.3 pada sebuah resital piano di sekolah tersebut, lulus dengan gelar sarjana sebagai pemain juga dalam hal pengajaran piano. Ia juga salah satu dari di antara anggota para pendiri SLU's Delta Omega yang merupakan bagian dari Phi Mu Alpha Simfonia, dan bermain sepak bola dengan posisi sebagai quarterback untuk tim persahabatan, dan membantu mereka memenangkan turnamen dalam ruang tertutup 1949, di sekolah itu.
Bill Evans bermain secara profesional pertama kalinya dengan pemain saksofon Herbie Fields, yang berbasis di Chicago. Selama musim panas tahun 1950, band ini melakukan tur tiga bulan mengiringi Billie Holiday, termasuk penampilan di Pantai Timur Amerika, yaitu di Harlem's Apollo Theater dan penampilan lain di Philadelphia, Baltimore, dan di Howard Theater Washington DC.
